November is Jewish Book Month.  Looking for a fascinating book?  Lady at the OK Corral by Ann Kirschner is the definitive biography of Josephine Marcus Earp, the Jewish widow of famed lawman and gambler, Wyatt Earp.  Based on in-depth historical research, it traces the life of Josephine and Wyatt from their first days in the Arizona Territory, to the boomtowns of San Diego and Alaska, ending up in Hollywood and the early days of Western movies.

June is PTSD Awareness Month

June is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness Month.  There is an interesting article in today’s Huffington Post Healthy Living by Dr. Lloyd Sederer about how to care for a loved one who suffers from PTSD.  Dr. Sederer is the medical director of New York State’s Office of Mental Health (OMH) and past mental health commissioner for New York City.  He is also the author of  THE FAMILY GUIDE TO MENTAL HEALTH CARE (W.W. Norton & Company Hardcover; April 2013).

San Francisco Chronicle calls Black Russian “a gracefully written feat of historical sleuthing.”

We’re thrilled that Vladimir Alexandrov’s THE BLACK RUSSIAN is receiving the critical acclaim it deserves. The San Francisco Chronicle recently gave this biography a great review, drawing interesting comparisons between Frederick Bruce Thomas and Ellison’s Invisible Man. You can read the full review here: San Francisco Chronicle/booksFrederick Thomas .

NEXUS sells out on Amazon on launch day

The release of NEXUS by Ramez Naam has gone amazingly well. NEXUS made it to #1 on Amazon’s “Hot New Science Fiction” list and #50 on their overall Fiction list. Amazon completely sold out all of their physical stock on launch day and then almost did it again a second time. The book is off to a great start.

Books sell, in the long run, by word of mouth. NEXUS has gotten amazing reviews at BoingBoing, Wired, Ars Technica, The Wall Street Journal, and more. But all of those will have their impact only in the very beginning. What matters after the first few months is whether people who read the book recommend it to each other. So far that looks to be going well – on Amazon the book already has almost 80 customer reviews, more than three quarters of them five stars, and the rest all four stars.

So, in summary: thank you, thank you, thank you for helping get NEXUS off to an amazing start! It’s been a great way to kick off the new year.
