Happy Publication Day, SONGS OF MY SELFIE!

Redeye/Chicago Tribune knows a good thing when they see it. They’re calling SONGS OF MY SELFIE one of “25 new books we can’t wait to get our hands on in April!”

Millennials—people born between 1981 to 2000—currently number 88 million, and make up the largest generation of the US population today. Yet, despite its size, the generation as a whole has often been wrongly described as entitled, selfie-obsessed, overly earnest, and whiny. In SONGS OF MY SELFIE (Three Rooms Press Trade Paperback Original), millennials speak directly about their experiences, and the result is a compelling new view of a generation that defies stereotypes. Available in bookstores NOW!

An Evening with Israel Horovitz with very special guest Estelle Parsons

Renowned playwright, screenwriter, and director Israel Horovitz will be joined by Academy Award-winning star of stage and screen Estelle Parsons for an evening of reading and discussion of Horovitz’s new book, MY OLD LADY: Complete Stage Play and Screenplay with an Essay on Adaptation (2016, Three Rooms Press). The event will be at Barrow Street Theatre, 27 Barrow Street (at 7th Avenue) in New York City, Monday, April 18, 7 p.m. The $15 admission fee includes a free, signed copy of the book.

At the event, Horovitz and Parsons will read and discuss scenes from both stage and screen versions of MY OLD LADY. Cover

Parsons, who won an Oscar for her role in Bonnie and Clyde, recently starred in a critically-acclaimed staging of MY OLD LADY at Palm Beach Dramaworks. The Wall Street Journal had high praise for the play and Parsons, calling it “Magic . . . beautifully drawn characters . . . Estelle Parsons has amazing energy and forcefulness . . .” Parsons will soon star in Horovitz’s new play, “Out of the Mouths of Babes” at Cherry Lane Theatre June 7 through July 17.

In 2014, at the age of 74, Horovitz adapted MY OLD LADY as a film—starring Kevin Kline, Maggie Smith, and Kristin Scott Thomas—which he also directed. RogerEbert.com called the film version “A revelation and a pleasure.”

In the new book, scripts for the play and film are bridged with a lengthy essay in which Horovitz shares his insights into the creative process and knowledge gained while transforming the spoken language of the stage to the visual language of the screen. Barnet Kellmen, film director and professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, notes that, “Adapting a play to the screen can be a perilous undertaking . . . Luckily Israel Horovitz is the perfect guide . . . “

Tickets for the event are $15 and can be purchased in advance or at the door. For ticketing information and additional details, visit ThreeRoomsPress.

Booklist picks WEIRD GIRL & WHAT’S HIS NAME as their lead review of the day!

Weird Girl Book CoverCongrats to Three Rooms Press and to Meagan Brothers, author of WEIRD GIRL AND WHAT’S HIS NAME (Three Rooms Press Trade Paperback Original: October 13, 2015; $15.95). Not only did Booklist give her forthcoming YA novel a starred review, they also picked the book as their lead review of the day, today (August 13, 2015).

You may be a fan of Meagan Brothers already. Her previous book, Supergirl Mixtape, was an indy hit. Her new YA novel is a coming-of-age story for the twenty-first century. In the tiny podunk town of Hawthorne, North Carolina, high school geeks Lula and Rory share everything— a love of sci-fi and fantasy, a questioning of their sexuality, resentment toward the parents that abandoned them, an obsession with old X-Files episodes, and the feeling that they’ll never quite fit in. Lula and Rory have no secrets from each other; after all, she knows he’s gay, and he understands why she worships the mother that walked out on her.

But then Lula discovers that Rory—her Rory, who maybe she’s secretly had feelings for—has not only tried out for the football team, but has been having an affair with his middle-aged divorcee boss. With their friendship disrupted, Lula begins to question her very identity, and when she disappears in the middle of the night in a desperate search for her long-lost mother, Rory is left to survive on his own.
When Lula returns, neither she nor Rory are the same, and they are forced to make amends and move on from that summer, or risk repeating the mistakes of their parents’ generation.
Meagan Brother’s piercing prose speaks to anyone who has ever felt unwanted and alone, and who struggles to find their place in an isolating world.

Early buzz for Meagan Brothers’ LGBT YA novel, WEIRD GIRL & WHAT’S HIS NAME (October 2015)

Weird Girl Book Cover

Three Rooms Press will publish Meagan Brothers’ new LGBT YA novel, WEIRD GIRL AND WHAT’S HIS NAME, this October 2015, and this quirky book is already receiving great early reviews. Kirkus Reviews weighed in this week:

In a small town in North Carolina, a close friendship between two eccentric high schoolers breaks apart, leaving a rift…Rory narrates the first half of the book and Lula, the second, and both voices are crisply and intimately drawn. Minor characters are equally vibrant, particularly Walter, Lula’s rugged but kind stepfather, and Seth, the school’s unexpectedly wholesome and gentle quarterback. The X-Files, the details of which both Lula and Rory lovingly recount, provides a strong common language and set of symbols throughout.

Carefully and subtly imagined.
